A welcoming place in the forest
The Maison de la Biosphère et de la Forêt gives visitors somewhere to pause, ask a question and understand the landscape before setting out. It stands near the Gorges de Franchard, where sandstone, pine trees and sandy paths introduce the character of the forest almost immediately.
The Biosphere Reserve says the Maison offers a place to rest and find information, along with activities listed in its programme. Getting there without taking a wrong turn
The Maison stands on the Route de l’Ermitage near the Gorges de Franchard in Fontainebleau. Set your navigation to Parking des Gorges de Franchard. Motor vehicles cannot continue along the forest road all the way to the building. The final walk from the car park is about 200 metres.
That distinction matters. A navigation app may try to send you along a forest road that is closed to vehicles. Follow signs on the ground and never pass a barrier, even if the app tells you to continue.
What can you do there?
If the Maison is open, begin by asking which paths are accessible and which loop fits the time you have. Exhibitions and activities add useful context to the gorges, but their calendar does not tell you which forest routes are open.
Access can still change in parts of the forest following the fires of July 2026. Open the ONF map of accessible paths and forest roads on the day of your visit.
For the walk itself, our Franchard guide will help you choose a manageable route. Resist packing a visit to the Maison, a long hike and several villages into one day. Half a day at Franchard leaves more room for the rocks, pauses and questions.
With children
Bring water, wear shoes with good grip and choose a short route. The boulders invite climbing, but even a modest height can lead to a painful fall. Choose durable ground for play and avoid mosses and other small, fragile habitats.
A family activity from the programme is often more memorable than trying to explain everything yourself. Check upcoming events, look at the stated age and book directly with the organiser when registration is required.
