An hour, two hours or an easy half-day
Short walks in Fontainebleau Forest
A short distance can still contain sand, rocks or many stops. Choose a genuinely short walk that suits your party and the time available.

Short in distance, not always in experience
Fontainebleau can fill two hours with fewer than four kilometres. Sand slows your pace, a passage among boulders demands careful feet, and a forest junction may require another look at the route sheet. Add a pool, a viewpoint or six learning stops and the little loop becomes a proper outing.
Do not compare distance alone. Look at the published time, ascent, type of ground, starting point and reason for walking together. Someone who wants to study the trees will move differently from a group taking a quick breath of air before lunch.
The figures below come from current Amis de la Forêt de Fontainebleau sheets or routes published with the ONF and tourist office. They never guarantee that a path is open. Begin with the ONF map of accessible areas, then open the exact sheet for your chosen walk.
Under an hour: the Perspective de Maintenon
The AFF lists yellow trail 10 at the Perspective de Maintenon as 2.6 km, 50 minutes and 63 metres of ascent, starting at the Allée de Maintenon car park on the D58. Easy is the published grade, not a promise of completely level ground. The ascent explains why it feels more energetic than an urban walk of the same length.
The route connects a long forest avenue with the relief of Petit Mont Chauvet. It works well for visitors who want a clear objective without devoting a whole half-day to the forest. Keep an hour and a quarter free, however, so there is time to find the start, enjoy the perspective and return without hurrying.
Our detailed Maintenon guide also covers a longer circuit published by Fontainebleau Tourisme. Do not combine the distances or directions from the two variants. Choose one sheet, its start and its marking before leaving the road.
An easy-to-shorten riverside walk: Petit Barbeau
Yellow trail 5 at Petit Barbeau is a 5.2 km loop listed at 2 hours, with only 20 metres of ascent. It begins at the Maison Forestière du Petit Barbeau car park. The Seine, mature trees and transition into the forest give variety without a substantial climb.
The same sheet describes an option accessible to people with reduced mobility: a 4.4 km out-and-back, around 1 hour 30 minutes, with no ascent listed. Turn back where the path leaves the Seine. That detail matters because it stops a visitor from continuing automatically into the forest section, which no longer offers the same level of accessibility.
This is a good option for parties that value being able to return along a familiar path. The route is shared with other users, including cyclists on some stretches. Stay visible, leave a useful width of path and do not turn a bench or path edge into a pile of bags.
For curious children: Cabaret Masson
The Cabaret Masson loop is 2.6 km, yet its sheet allows about 2 hours. The difference from Maintenon is not a mistake. Six stops invite walkers to notice a notable oak, erosion, the Cyclope boulder, a passage linked to Denecourt, mosses and dead wood. Rocks and questions take time.
This walk works when the purpose is to understand the forest rather than collect kilometres. Its sheet also explains where to leave blue trail 4 after Grotte de Robert le Diable and return by Routes Haüy and de Luxembourg. Keep it open at that junction.
A child comfortable with roots and sand may find more variety here than on a broad avenue. That does not make the route suitable for a pushchair. For that need, choose the explicitly accessible Petit Barbeau option or seek a current confirmation for one of the six adapted yellow trails.
For rocks and viewpoints: Cassepot
The AFF gives yellow trail 17 at Rocher Cassepot as 3.7 km, 2 hours 30 minutes and 74 metres of ascent, beginning at Butte à Guay car park. The small distance hides slower ground and several navigation decisions. The current AFF sheet calls it easy, while the tourist office now shows a moderate grade. Use the more cautious assessment for a group.
The circuit reaches Mare Froideau, curving forest roads and two openings over the landscape. It briefly crosses blue trail 3, which is a different and wider itinerary. Follow the yellow and the roadbook for the short loop. Our Rocher Cassepot guide explains the seven published directions.
Cassepot suits walkers happy to move slowly over uneven ground. If your free time ends strictly after two hours, choose Maintenon or Cabaret Masson rather than trying to rush this loop.
A free hour at Rocher Canon
The complete Rocher Canon and Mare aux Evées route is 5 km. It is rewarding, but not necessarily the right choice before an appointment. For a flexible outing, stay around Rocher Canon for a time decided in advance, then return along the same route. You will still see the boulders, pines and everyday life of an area shared with climbers.
Do not invent a loop among the rocks by following coloured arrows. Those belong to climbing circuits. If you intend to reach Mare aux Evées, take the complete roadbook and allow enough time for it.
A quick choice for your party
- Published walking time under one hour: Maintenon, if 63 metres of ascent suits everyone.
- An accessible out-and-back: Petit Barbeau, turning at the point specified by the AFF.
- Curious children used to uneven ground: Cabaret Masson, with two hours for the stops.
- Rocks and a more active walk: Cassepot, allowing more than two hours.
- No strict finishing time: the full Rocher Canon and Mare aux Evées route, with its dedicated sheet.
If you arrive by train, include the approach from the station. A fifty-minute loop designed around a car park does not become a fifty-minute outing without a car. Our walks from railway stations guide uses routes designed around the railway instead of adding a long approach beside a road.
Keep the outing genuinely short
Download the roadbook, save the exact car park and decide where you will turn back if someone becomes tired. Check the expected mark at the first junction. Taking the wrong branch is the quickest way to double a small walk.
Check the AFF trail-status page too. If a path is closed, do not try to rescue the plan with an improvised connection. Pick another short route sheet. The pleasure of these loops lies in their scale: enough forest to look properly, with time left for lunch, the château or an unhurried journey home.
